A Brief History of Chlamydia By Dr. Xinping Song

Chlamydia is the most commonly contracted sexually transmitted disease in the United States, with as many as three million new cases being diagnosed every year. Frightening in its number of victims, chlamydia has likely been around for millennia, as suggested by ancient Egyptian and Chinese documents that describe a disease closely resembling it.

Even so, the disease was only recently identified correctly. In 1907, Halberstaedter and von Prowazek “discovered” chlamydia in Java, determining it to be the cause of eye infections in orangutans. Describing the pathogen as a protozoan, the pair assigned it the name chlamydozoa. Researchers in 1965, however, found this to be a misnomer, as the pathogen proved to be bacterial in nature, leading to the development of antibiotic treatment.

Much research has been conducted since, and new species, genera, and families have been established. Despite modern findings, the terminology used to describe chlamydia serves as reminders of its historical reputation as a virus.
